laser (english)

In cooperation with the World Federation for Laser Dentistry (WFLD), the magazine laser: international magazine of laser dentistry addresses all dental professionals worldwide using or interested in dental laser technology. Readers receive regular updates on the world of international laser dentistry by means of user-oriented case studies, scientific reports as well as summarised product information. The magazine is particularly focussing on reports from international scientific congresses and symposia as well as on the international activities of the World Federation for Laser Dentistry. This high-gloss English language magazine is published four times a year. Since 2015, additional German-speaking abstracts have given an overview about each article’s content. News articles in German complete the new function of laser as the official magazine of the DGL in Germany. laser thus has replaced Laser Journal, which had appeared in 17 annual volumes of four issues until the end of 2014.

Editorial: Wavelength variation
Prof. Dr Norbert Gutknecht
More and more companies offer laser systems with a variety of wavelengths for dental indications. This development gives rise to the hope that the insight in absorption, transmission, reflexion and dispersion in different tissues after irradiation with various wavelengths and the different effects on this tissues will increase. On the other hand we must now ask ourselves when different wavelengths should be applied alternatingly or at staggered intervals.

Periodontal therapy of deep localised pockets larger than 9 mm—Adjunctive laser irradiation without antibiotics or open surgery
Dr Gottfried Gisler, MSc, Switzerland
he aim of this paper is to demonstrate that even “hopeless” teeth with very deep periodontal pockets of 10 mm and more pocket depth can be saved. Lasers as adjunctive therapy in periodontics have been described for a long time for the following reasons: Bactericidal effect of low-level laser application in photodynamic therapies 1–4 and decrease of immuneinflammatory mediators 5 , stimulation of wound healing with application of low-level lasers 6–9 , bactericidal effect 10 –12 or better wound healing for lasers in the near infrared like diode lasers 13 or Nd:YAG lasers 14,15 , calculus removing 16 ,17 , and bactericidal effect with lasers in the middle infrared 18–20 and stimulation of bone healing with Er:YAG lasers...
Photodamage of dental pulpa stem cells during 700 fs laser exposure
Prof. Dr Karsten König & Dr Anton Kasenbacher, Germany
Human stem cells from the dental pulp of adults (given by S. Gronthos, NIH, Bethesda, USA) were cultivated in a -modifi ed Eagle’s Medium (MEM) by Gibco BRL Life Technologies (Paisley, Scotland) while adding 20 % FCS, 2 mM L-glutamine, 100 μM L-ascorbate-2-phosphate, 100 u Penicillin and 100 μg/ml Streptomycin at 5 % CO 2 and 37°C in 25 ml and 75 ml cell culture fl asks (Greiner, Frickenhausen, Germany). 1 The cells were treated for experiments and cultivation with 0.25 % trypsin, 5 mM glucose, 0.05% EDTA in PBS for 5 minutes at 37 °C

Editorial: Wellenlängenvariation
Prof. Dr. Norbert Gutknecht
